Rumours started circulating that two first-year female students had died by suicide, a claim that grew after students said they heard screams from a hostel and noticed two ambulances on the campus. LPU: A Similar Story, Turns Violent

Barely a day later, a much larger and more destructive protest broke out at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab. Unrest began around 2 a.m. on the night of September 26–27, 2026, near the girls' hostel, after a social media message alleged that a female student had been raped. Delhi: A Different, More Serious Trigger

The Delhi protests stem from a real and confirmed crime, not a rumour. On September 21, 2026, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men in Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir, after she and a male friend visited the temple and entered the park. Business Standard

What made this worse for nearby students was what happened next. One of the accused, Asif, allegedly opened fire on a police team that intercepted him barely 50 metres from Lady Shri Ram College's (LSR) back gate, firing three rounds — one of which hit a constable's bulletproof vest — before police shot him in the leg. This led women students to speak up. LSR students held an all-women solidarity march, raising slogans and carrying posters demanding better security infrastructure around the college. What connects Chitkara and LPU is clear: unverified posts on platforms like Instagram and Reddit created panic that boiled over into real violence, before any official confirmation existed. In Delhi's case, the underlying incident was real and confirmed — but it exposed genuine gaps in public safety infrastructure that women students say they've been flagging for years.

For students, parents, and campus administrators, the lesson is the same everywhere: verify before reacting, but also fix the safety gaps that make rumours believable in the first place.
